  • Enhance Your Space with Delightful Fragrances: The Magic of Scented Sachets

    December 08, 2023 5 min read

    香包的神奇威力:為家居添上你喜愛的香味!

In this blog, you are going to learn about the wonderful world of scented sachets. These small, yet fragrant, bags of delights can turn your humble abode into a sanctuary filled with the uplifting aromas. I’ll cover what scented sachets are, their benefits, how to use them effectively and delve into a bit of DIY scented sachets. Moving on!

    What are Scented Sachets

    Scented sachets

Scented sachets are small porous pouches, not unlike tea bags, that are stuffed with aromatic materials that slowly emit pleasant odors that are bound to relax and loosen you up after a long day. They are typically made from fabric or paper, and come in various sizes from a small tea bag to a near adult fist size, this would determine where you would ultimately hang the sachet. Their scents are floral or herbal to fruity and seasonal scents, though the most common ones are lavender, rose, jasmine, ocean and vanilla. Whatever your preference, there is a scent for everyone and the mood you want to emulate. I personally like to swap them around when I get bored of a scent or that it becomes dulled due to my prolonged exposure.

    Benefits of Scented sachets

There are some surprising benefits of using scented sachets. If you find that your room is stuffy and not smelling too well, then you can try using one of these to clear the air, freshen it up and even eliminate unpleasant odors. In an indirect way, with the nasty smells removed from your haven, you will no doubt feel more at ease and breathe easier, no doubt relaxing you and calming you. Next, depending on the smell you have chosen, it can improve your mood and invite memories associated with the smell, perhaps a shop or house you visited or a lingering scent from a passerby. All in all, scented sachets will not change your fortune, nor will it remove a bad mood. It will change the way you feel when you get back home which can slowly enhance the experience, since this is a place where you spend most of your time. I very much believe in making it as peaceful as possible in the busy and noisy city of Hong Kong.

    How to Use Scented Sachets

Put scented sachets in your closet to freshen your clothes up
Put scented sachets in your closet to freshen your clothes up!

This part is not rocket science, select the scent you adore, place it in the area where you want it to most diffuse the smell, this can include, your rooms, living room, drawers, closet or even in your pillowcase (in which case I recommend lavender scent). They do not require airflow to operate and they normally last, on average, 3 months. You will know you picked the right scent and placed it most appropriately when guests overstay their welcome.

How to Choose the Right Scent

There are only really two simple options to do this. The first one is you are already aware of the scents you like (and you go buy that one). The second option is to simply try them one by one, which in itself can be a rewarding experience and allow you to discover scents you didn’t know you like. It's important to note that you need to consider if you have any allergies which may be triggered by scents.

    Caring for Scented Sachets

Now you understand what scented sachets are and how to choose one, next we discuss how to care for them, so that they live a natural and full life, and see if we can even extend it. They can be stored in air tight containers when not in use and keep them dry, this normally allows a lifetime of around 3 months, but if you sense that the smell is starting to dull, you can either add a few drops of the same smelling essential oils (like a kiss of life) or you may try to crush the dried herbs inside the sachets, in an effort not unlike squeezing the last ounce of life out of them ( you are getting your money's worth).

    Conclusion

Scented sachets are a great addition to any home space, being able to lift the room with fresh lingering fragrance. Their benefits can also affect your mood, ultimately taking you to a calmer and peaceful place, away from the hustle and bustle of busy Hong Kong.

    Bonus DIY

Making your own DIY scented sachets can be a fun and creative project. Here's a simple method to create your personalized sachets -

    Materials needed:

    1. Fabric squares or pouches (around 4x4 inches or any desired size)

    2. Sewing machine or needle and thread

    3. Dried flowers, herbs, or aromatic materials of your choice (such as lavender, rose petals, chamomile, or dried citrus peels)

    4. Essential oils (optional)

    5. Ribbon or string for tying (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the fabric:

    • Cut the fabric into square pieces of your desired size. Aim for around 4x4 inches, but you can adjust the size to your preference.

    • Place two fabric squares together, with the patterned sides facing each other.

    1. Sew the fabric:

    • Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew three sides of the fabric squares together, leaving one side open. This will create a pocket or pouch for the scented materials.

    • If using a sewing machine, use a small straight stitch and backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams. If sewing by hand, use a strong and neat stitch.

    1. Fill the sachets:

    • Once the pouch is sewn, turn it inside out so that the patterned side is facing outwards.

    • Fill the pouch with your chosen dried flowers, herbs, or aromatic materials. You can experiment with different combinations and scents.

    • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to enhance the fragrance, if desired. This step is optional but can provide a stronger and longer-lasting scent.

    1. Seal the sachets:

    • After filling the pouch, carefully fold or tuck in the open side of the fabric.

    • You can sew the open side shut using a sewing machine or by hand, or simply tie it with a ribbon or string to secure the sachet.

    1. Enjoy and use the sachets:

    • Once the sachets are sealed, they are ready to use. Place them in drawers, closets, or any areas you wish to freshen up or add a pleasant fragrance.

    • You can also gift these handmade sachets to friends and loved ones, spreading the joy of delightful scents.

Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, sizes, and scents to create unique and personalized sachets that suit your preferences and style. Remember to store any unused sachets in airtight containers to preserve their scent until you're ready to use them.
