“The humidity has been on the rise. Water is dripping down my walls out of nowhere. Even the sheets I sleep in feel obnoxiously wet…” These are the accurate portrayals of Hong Kong in these past few days. The annoyingly high humidity in Hong Kong can be a nuisance for most. Molds and mildew may already be the unwelcomed neighbors on your bathroom walls. Some have even reported repugnant fungus (we’re talking about actual mushrooms) growing on their walls. The humidity is bringing us more than discomfort. If left unchecked, it could even affect our health.
No electric humidifiers? Worry not! There are plenty of ways to counter the dreading humidity, and you can probably find some of these at home now!
If you think the only function of laundry powder is for laundry… you can’t be more mistaken! Laundry powder can help reduce the unbearably sticky humidity in your home! Put the laundry powder into a small plastic container, and create numerous holes in its lid. Simply place the finished box wherever you need a little extra dehumidifying boost and it will get the work done!
Coffee is more than delicious caffeine in a cup! It is a brilliant agent that eliminates lingering odors as well as absorbs the overwhelming moisture in the air. Once thoroughly dried, either through baking used coffee ground in the oven or simply by sun-drying, fill it in a small pouch and place it in your cabinets or closet. The coffee ground will soak up all the unwanted moisture and neutralize the odors where it can reach!
Sweet bonus: Did your shoes get soaked walking in the rain? Place a small pouch of coffee grounds in your shoes to prevent any unwanted odors and let them dry quicker!
“Maybe if I keep the windows closed, the moisture can’t get in?” This is a very common misconception. The water particles can still seep in through the small gaps of the windows and a closed environment seals all moisture in. Sunlight helps the moisture evaporate faster. Without it, the moisture may even lead to the growth of mildew, so keep them open during the day for better ventilation!
However, when the sun goes down, humidity in the air will grow thicker. Only then is it a smarter measure to keep the windows closed since it can reduce the humidity indoors to an extent.
This is quite possibly one of the most enjoyable and easiest ways to reduce the moisture in the room. Scented candles can dilute the moldiness in the air with their atmospheric aroma. The heat also helps dispel humidity! What’s better than a cozy evening while keeping your place warmer and drier?
We’re not saying barbecue works in reducing moisture (nor are we saying it doesn’t)... Charcoal itself is an incredibly absorbent substance. Odor and water particles tend to latch onto the carbon in charcoal. Wrap it up with a piece of paper or simply put it in a small pouch and place it in cabinets, drawers, and even dampened shoes!
Or if you’re not the biggest fan of home DIYs, DoDoME’s Dehumidifier Box is here for you! Infused with activated charcoal and a pristine baby powder scent, it effortlessly tackles the moldy odor and the pesky moisture in the air. The convenient box design is perfect to be placed in a shoe cabinet, closet, or even bookshelf.
The humid season in Hong Kong rarely stays for long, but it’s still long enough to cultivate the growth of bacteria and molds. Stay ahead of the humidity and keep your house protected before the humidity takes over!
